FedEx Says Delivery Attempted but You Were Home? Do This
You were right there. Nobody knocked. No tag on the door. And tracking says they tried. Here's how to get the package moving again, and how to stop it from happening every week.
If FedEx says delivery was attempted but you were home, get the photo first. FedEx says your tracking number gets you picture proof of a delivery attempt, which shows where the driver stopped. Then don't just wait for the next try. FedEx's missed delivery help page says FedEx Delivery Manager can send the package to a nearby FedEx location or a store like Walgreens or Dollar General. All you need is the tracking number or the door tag number. If nobody picks it up within 7 days, it goes back. With UPS, track it with the notice number or the tracking number. UPS says it may make up to three delivery attempts, and then the package goes back to the sender.
"But I was sitting right here"
We hear some version of this at our counter a lot. A customer works from home out past Sultan. They had the laptop open all afternoon, ten steps from the front door. The dog didn't bark. The doorbell camera shows the mail carrier, a neighbor's kid, and nothing else. Then tracking flips to "Delivery attempted."
Honestly, the anger makes sense. You did your part. You stayed home.
But here's the thing we tell people first: the scan doesn't tell you why. It only tells you the package didn't get to you on that stop. Sometimes there's a good reason you couldn't see. Sometimes the scan doesn't match what really happened at your door. You don't have to guess which one it was. The carrier's own tools can show you, and that's where to start.
What "delivery attempted" actually means
On both FedEx and UPS tracking, "delivery attempted" is the driver's record that the stop ended without the package being handed over or left. That's all it is. It's not a judgment about you, and it's not proof the driver walked up to your door.
The carriers' own pages name a few reasons a package can't be left:
- It needs a signature. FedEx says a package that requires a signature can't be left at a home. It goes to a nearby FedEx location instead (FedEx).
- There's no safe spot. FedEx lists "the driver can't find a secure spot" as the other main reason.
- The address has a problem. UPS lets you fix small address mistakes, like a missing apartment number or a wrong ZIP code, after a failed attempt (UPS Change a Delivery). If they offer that, a bad address is a common cause.
- The shipper set rules. UPS notes that a shipper can block delivery changes, and some contents (high-value items or imports, for example) aren't eligible.
Around Monroe we'd add a few more from the counter side. Long gravel driveways off US-2 where the house isn't visible from the road. A gate that's closed. House numbers that are hard to see at dusk. Apartment buildings with a call box nobody answers. A home business with a suite number on the label. None of those are anyone's fault, but they all end in the same scan. (Our rural driveway write-up gets into the gate and driveway problem in more detail.)
"Delivery attempted, business was closed" at a home
This one confuses people. If your tracking says the business was closed but you live there, look at the label. A company name, a "Suite," or an office-style address can make a home look like a business stop. UPS says commercial addresses are usually delivered by close of business, while homes are usually delivered between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., sometimes later (UPS tracking statuses). If your home is getting treated like an office, ask the shipper to fix the label for next time.
First move: get the photo
Before you call anyone, get the photo. It settles most arguments fast.
FedEx. FedEx says residential US shipments get picture proof of delivery or a delivery attempt. If the shipment doesn't need a signature, you don't need an account or a login. Just use the tracking number (FedEx picture proof). If you're signed up for FedEx Delivery Manager, FedEx says you get attempt photos automatically.
UPS. UPS says delivery photos show up in the delivery email, in alerts, on the UPS.com tracking page, and in the UPS My Choice dashboard (UPS Tracking Support). UPS talks about photos of deliveries. It doesn't promise a photo of every attempt. If there's no photo, write that down. It's part of your story when you call.
Now line it up with what you have. The scan time. Your doorbell camera clip from that time, if you have one. Keep the clip; you may need it. Skip posting it online while you're mad. It won't get your box back any faster.
No door tag? You can still find your package
People panic about the missing tag. Don't. The tag is just a pointer.
FedEx says the door tag number is linked to your original tracking number (FedEx). So if there's no tag, the tracking number does the same job. You can use it to get the attempt photo and to send a Delivery Manager request.
UPS works the same way. UPS says to track the package with the UPS Delivery Notice number or your original tracking number (UPS). Every tracking screen will show where the package is now and what you can do next.
FedEx vs UPS: what you can do after a "delivery attempted" scan
| FedEx | UPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of the stop | Picture proof of a delivery attempt from your tracking number (FedEx) | Delivery photos in tracking, emails, alerts and UPS My Choice; attempt photos not promised (UPS) |
| The notice | Door tag; its number links to your tracking number | UPS Delivery Notice with a 12-digit reference number |
| What happens next | If it can't be left (signature, no safe spot), it goes to a nearby FedEx location, held for pickup as early as the same day | Next delivery attempt; up to three attempts at UPS's choice, then back to the sender |
| How long it waits | Returned if not picked up within 7 days | At a UPS Access Point, held 7 calendar days, then returned to the sender |
| Send it somewhere else | FedEx Delivery Manager: redirect to a FedEx location or a store such as Walgreens or Dollar General | UPS My Choice or "Change My Delivery" from tracking; pick up at a UPS Customer Center if you ask by 7 p.m. |
| Let them leave it next time | Delivery Manager lets you choose where to leave it, like the back door | Sign the notice to release it, unless it needs an adult 21+ signature |
| Who to call | 1.800.463.3339 (FedEx) | UPS Help and Support Center |

A note on UPS My Choice. UPS has a free Basic level and a paid Premium level. On the free level, some changes cost extra, like delivering on another day or to a different address. Check the UPS My Choice page before you click.
What to do today, in order
This is the order we'd go in if it were our package.
- Screenshot the tracking scan. Get the date, the time, and the exact words.
- Pull the carrier photo. FedEx from the tracking number. UPS from tracking or My Choice.
- Grab your own proof. Doorbell clip, a note of where you were. Keep it short and factual.
- Decide: wait or move it. If it needs a signature, or you can't promise you'll hear the door tomorrow, move it. Use FedEx Delivery Manager or UPS "Change My Delivery." Waiting for attempt two on a workday is usually the wrong bet.
- Fix the address if it's wrong. UPS shows a "Correct my Address" option on tracking after a failed attempt. If it's not there, UPS says to contact the sender.
- Report it calmly. Call FedEx at 1.800.463.3339, or go through the UPS Help and Support Center. Give the tracking number, the scan time, and what your camera shows. Ask what they can do to get the package to you. Polite and specific gets further than angry.
- Tell the seller, too. The seller paid for the label, so they're the carrier's customer. Send them your screenshots. A seller can often push a carrier harder than you can, and they'll want to know before the package bounces back to them.
- Set up the carrier tools. FedEx Delivery Manager and UPS My Choice (the Basic level is free) both send delivery alerts, so you'll know what's coming.
One warning. If a text about your "missed delivery" asks you to pay a fee or enter a card number to reschedule, stop. Go to the carrier's site yourself and type in the tracking number. We wrote up the FedEx driver text scam because so many people around here get them.
Why waiting for "attempt two" often fails
Here's our honest take. The second try usually comes the very next business day. UPS says that if it can't deliver a package that's out for delivery, it tries again the next business day (UPS). Now think about what stopped the first try. The gate, the hidden house number, the signature you can't give from work. If it's still there, the second try will likely end the same way.
And the clock is running. FedEx sends a package back if nobody picks it up within 7 days. UPS sends it back to the sender after the last attempt. So the day of the first scan is the day to act.
If you were truly away and the package needed a signature, that's a different job. Our post on signature-required packages when nobody's home walks through that cycle. And if tracking hasn't moved in days, see package stuck in transit instead.
When it keeps happening: ship it to a staffed counter
One missed scan is bad luck. The third one in a month means something about your address isn't working. Maybe it's the long driveway. Maybe it's the apartment call box. Maybe it's that every big delivery seems to need a signature and you're at work when the truck comes by.
That's the point where we'd stop fighting the porch.
At The Mail Station on Old Owen Road in Monroe, on the US-2 side of town, you get a real street address with your own suite number. You ship there instead of home. A carrier drops it off, any carrier: UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, Amazon. Our staff signs for it, including signature-required parcels, and shelves it indoors. Then we text and email you that it's here. No waiting by the door. No door tag. There's staff at the counter whenever we're open.
A few plain facts so nothing surprises you:
- For packages every week, that's package receiving with a private mailbox. Mailbox holders get 24/7 mailbox access, so you can pick up on your schedule.
- For one big delivery, say a laptop while you're out of town, package holding covers a single package without a full mailbox.
- Heavy package volume? Ask us first. Plans differ by how much comes in, and we'd rather set it up right than guess.
- We're not a FedEx or UPS pickup point. You ship to us at your suite address. We take UPS deliveries for our customers, but we don't ship UPS labels out from the counter. For sending, we handle FedEx, USPS, and DHL.
We've been doing this in Monroe since 1982. The same staff signs for your packages every time.
FAQ
Why does FedEx say delivery attempted when no one knocked?
The scan only records that the package wasn't delivered on that stop. FedEx names a needed signature and no secure spot as reasons a package can't be left. It could also be an address or access problem. Pull the picture proof of the attempt to see where the driver actually stopped. Then redirect the package with FedEx Delivery Manager or call 1.800.463.3339.
What does "delivery attempted" mean on UPS?
It means the driver's first try didn't work. UPS may make up to three attempts on regular delivery days. After the last one, the package goes back to the sender. Track it with the notice number or tracking number to see the next try or to change the delivery (UPS).
FedEx attempted delivery but there's no door tag. What now?
Use your tracking number. FedEx says the door tag number is linked to your original tracking number. So the tracking number gets you the attempt photo, the package's location, and a Delivery Manager redirect.
How do I keep the package from going back to the sender?
Act on the first scan. With FedEx, pick it up within 7 days or redirect it to a FedEx location or retail store. With UPS, track it and use "Change My Delivery." If it went to an Access Point, pick it up within 7 calendar days. To get it at a UPS Customer Center, UPS needs your request by 7 p.m.
Can The Mail Station sign for my FedEx and UPS packages?
Yes, when they're addressed to your suite at our Monroe counter. Staff sign for all carriers, including signature-required parcels, and hold them indoors until you come in. We're not a FedEx or UPS pickup location for packages addressed to your home, though.
