Google Business Profile Suspended? PO Boxes Are a Trigger
Google Business Profile Suspended? PO Boxes Are a Trigger
A Monroe contractor got a suspension email, checked the profile, and found the address field still said "P.O. Box." Google's own help pages call that out by name — and a rented street-style mailbox is not a magic Maps fix.
A Google Business Profile listed at a P.O. Box can be suspended. Google's own policy overview says merchants that set their business address at a P.O. Box will have their profile suspended (Overview of Google Business Profile policies). The guidelines also say P.O. boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations aren't acceptable, and that renting a mailing address without operating there (a virtual office) isn't eligible for a Business Profile (Guidelines for representing your business on Google).
That is the short answer. The longer answer matters for Monroe-area owners who mix three different needs: Maps visibility, postcard or letter verification, and everyday business mail from banks, vendors, and the state.
Those are not the same problem. Mixing them up is how people "fix" a suspension by renting any address, then get suspended again.
What Google Actually Says (Not What Forums Guess)
Before anyone promises a workaround, read the primary sources. We do at the counter when a customer walks in with a screenshot of a red banner on their listing.
From Google's guidelines for representing your business:
- "P.O. boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations aren't acceptable."
- Create the profile for your actual, real-world location.
- If you must specify a mailbox or suite number: put the physical street on Address Line 1 and the mailbox or suite on Address Line 2.
- If you rent a physical mailing address but don't operate out of that location (a virtual office), that location isn't eligible for a Business Profile.
- Businesses that show their address on Google should maintain permanent fixed signage of the business name at that address.
- Co-working is only okay when there is clear signage, customers can visit during hours, and your staff are there during hours.
- Service-area businesses should usually hide the address and set a service area instead.
From Google's policies overview:
- "Businesses with a P.O. Box address aren't permitted on Google Business Profile. Merchants that set their business address at a P.O. Box will have their profile suspended."
- To qualify, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours (with limited exceptions listed in Google's eligibility articles).
From business eligibility and ownership guidelines:
- Not eligible examples include brands/organizations/artists and other online-only businesses, lead-generation companies, and any business whose address is listed as a P.O. box or mailbox in a remote location.
We are not restating a marketing blog. Those lines are Google's. If Google updates the pages later, trust the live Help Center over this post.
Why a PO Box Shows Up So Often in Suspension Stories
Local owners still use PO Boxes for good reasons: privacy, a stable pickup point, or "that's what we always used for mail." None of that makes a PO Box a storefront.
On Maps and Search, Google is trying to show people where a business can be visited — or, for service-area businesses, where the business is based while the address stays hidden. A PO Box number is a postal receptacle, not a place customers walk into. Google's policy text treats that as a hard eligibility problem, not a minor formatting typo.
We hear the same sequence from Monroe, Sultan, and Snohomish owners:
- They create or claim a profile using the PO Box because "it's the mailing address on the LLC papers."
- The profile looks fine for a while — or never verifies cleanly.
- A review, an edit, or a policy sweep triggers a suspension.
- Someone online says "just switch to any street address."
Step 4 is where people get hurt twice. A street number that is only a mail drop, with no eligible customer-facing presence, can still fail Google's virtual-office and remote-mailbox rules. Fixing the PO Box field helps only when the rest of the listing matches how the business actually operates.
Three Separate Jobs: Maps Listing, Verification Mail, Business Mail
Separate the jobs or you will buy the wrong fix.
| Job | What you need | What a PO Box does | What a staffed private mailbox helps with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show up correctly on Google Maps / Search | An eligible storefront or a proper service-area profile that follows Google's rules | Often triggers suspension if used as the listed address | Does not by itself make a virtual-only business eligible as a fake storefront |
| Receive Google postcard / letters / account mail | A reliable place mail can be signed for or picked up | May receive some mail; still fails as a Maps address | Street-style commercial address format; staffed receiving for letters and packages |
| Bank, vendor, insurance, licensing mail | A stable mailing address carriers and institutions can deliver to | Carriers and platforms often reject or limit PO Boxes | Real street + suite/PMB style address for mail — still not a KYC magic wand |
That middle and bottom rows are why Monroe businesses still rent boxes even when Maps rules are strict. Package carriers, marketplaces, and many forms hate bare PO Boxes. We already covered that carrier side in Why Amazon & FedEx Won't Deliver to Your PO Box. This article is the Google Maps / Business Profile angle — not a change-of-address how-to.
What a Private Mailbox Is — and What It Is Not — for GBP
A private mailbox at a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) is a rented box at a real street address. At The Mail Station, that address is on Old Owen Road in Monroe, with a suite or PMB number on line 2 when you write it correctly. Staff receive USPS, FedEx, UPS, and other carriers during store hours. That solves a mail problem.
It does not mean:
- You can list a virtual-only business as if customers visit the mailbox wall.
- Renting a box "ranks" you on Maps.
- A staffed CMRA overrides Google's storefront or service-area eligibility tests.
- We can guarantee reinstatement after a suspension.
Google still expects either an eligible location customers can visit (with signage when the address is shown) or a service-area setup that hides the address when that is the correct model. Read that again before anyone sells you "Maps compliance in a box."
Honest framing we use at the counter:
- PO Boxes are a common, officially named suspension trigger.
- Local businesses often still need a street-style mailing address for verification letters, banking mail, and vendors.
- A staffed private mailbox can help with mail handling and address format — education first, soft landing second.
- For suspensions, follow Google's official appeal path, not a random SEO thread.
Storefront vs Service-Area: Pick the Model That Matches Reality
Google's guidelines draw a bright line between businesses customers visit and businesses that travel to the customer.
Storefront-style businesses (shop, office with walk-in hours, lobby customers can enter) should list the real location, keep hours honest, and — if the address is shown — maintain permanent fixed signage of the business name.
Service-area businesses (plumber, mobile detailer, many consultants who go to the client) should usually hide the address and set a service area. Google says service-area businesses can't list a "virtual" office unless that office is staffed during business hours. Hiding a home address is common and allowed when you truly serve customers elsewhere.
Hybrid businesses that both serve on-site and travel can show the storefront and set a service area when the location is staffed and able to receive customers during stated hours.
None of those models say "put your PMB cubby number on Maps and call it a storefront." If your only presence at a mail center is a locked cubby, treat Maps eligibility as a Google policy question — not a mailbox upsell.
If Your Profile Is Already Suspended: Appeal Path (Official)
We do not reinstate Google profiles. Google does — when they approve an appeal.
Use Google's own article: Appeal Business Profile content & profile restrictions.
Practical points from that page (verify live steps in the tool; Google can change the UI):
- Check verification status before you appeal.
- Use the Google Business Profile appeals tool for suspended or disabled profiles (available for businesses in the UK/EEA and for the rest of the world for profile suspension appeals).
- Reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days. Do not spam multiple appeals for the same issue before you get a decision.
- You may be prompted to add evidence after submitting; if you open the evidence form, Google says you must submit it within 60 minutes or it may not attach.
- Example evidence Google lists includes official business registration, licenses, tax certificates, and utility bills. Names and addresses on documents should match the profile.
- Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while an appeal is under review.
If the suspension reason is a PO Box address, changing the address field without fixing eligibility still fails. Align the listing with how the business operates, then appeal with matching proof. We can help you receive mail and write a street-style mailing address. We cannot file the appeal for you as Google, and we cannot promise the outcome.
Checklist: Before You Touch the Address Field Again
- Read Google's guidelines and eligibility pages linked above — not a summary on social media.
- Decide storefront vs service-area based on real customer contact, not on what you wish Maps showed.
- Remove PO Box formatting from any profile that still uses it as the primary address.
- If you use a suite or mailbox number, put the street on Line 1 and the suite/mailbox on Line 2 per Google's guidance.
- If you show an address, confirm permanent fixed signage and staffed customer hours at that place — Google's rule, not ours.
- If you are service-area, hide the address and set a realistic service area instead of inventing a visit-able pin.
- Keep one profile per business location — duplicates cause their own mess.
- Appeal through Google's tool with matching documents; wait for the decision.
- Separate mailing needs from Maps needs — banks and vendors may still need a street-style mail address even when Maps hides your pin.
- Skip "rent any address to rank" pitches. That is the opposite of Google's guidelines.
Address Format When Mail (Not Maps Pin) Is the Goal
When the goal is receiving business mail — tax notices, bank cards, vendor samples, insurance packets — a private mailbox is often written like a commercial suite:
- Line 1: street address of the mail center
- Line 2: suite / PMB / box number
- City, state, ZIP of the mail center
Google's own guideline language for mailbox or suite numbers follows that Line 1 / Line 2 split when a mailbox number must be specified. That is about how to write an address — not a free pass to publish a virtual storefront.
For how customers mess up PMB formatting and bounce mail, see Why Your Mail Gets Returned: How to Write a PMB Address. For banks specifically, stay honest: a mailbox is often fine as a mailing address and usually not enough alone for KYC proof of identity — we covered that in Will a Bank Accept Your Private Mailbox Address?.
Soft Landing: Business Mail and Street-Style Address in Monroe
If you need a staffed place in Monroe to receive business mail and packages at a real street address — not a PO Box — that is a mailbox problem we actually solve.
Mailbox rentals and business mailbox options at The Mail Station give you a Monroe street address with a suite/PMB number, staffed receiving, and carrier acceptance that PO Boxes often lack. Setup uses USPS Form 1583 (we notarize in store when you bring proper ID). That helps with mail, privacy, and a professional return address on invoices.
What it is not: a promise that Google will approve a Maps pin for a business that never meets customers anywhere eligible. If your GBP issue is eligibility, start with Google's guidelines and appeals. If your issue is "vendors and banks keep rejecting my PO Box for mail," a staffed private mailbox is the direct tool.
Bring the suspension email or a screenshot if you want a plain-language read of which problem you have. We will tell you which half is mail — and which half is Google's to decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Google suspend a Business Profile that uses a P.O. Box? Google's policy overview says businesses with a P.O. Box address aren't permitted, and merchants that set their business address at a P.O. Box will have their profile suspended. See support.google.com/business/answer/13762416.
Does renting a private mailbox automatically fix a suspended Google listing? No. A private mailbox can provide a street-style mailing address for letters and packages. It does not, by itself, make a virtual-only or remote-mailbox listing eligible under Google's guidelines. Eligibility still depends on real customer contact rules, storefront vs service-area setup, and Google's review.
Can I put a mailbox or suite number on my Google Business Profile? Google's guidelines say if you must specify a mailbox or suite number, enter the physical street as Address Line 1 and the mailbox or suite as Address Line 2. That formatting tip does not override the ban on P.O. boxes, remote mailboxes, or virtual offices that don't operate at the location.
What if I only travel to customers and work from home? Many service-area businesses hide their address and set a service area instead of publishing a home pin. Follow Google's service-area guidance. Do not invent a fake storefront at a mail center.
How do I appeal a suspended Business Profile? Use Google's appeals instructions and tool: Appeal Business Profile content & profile restrictions. Prepare matching business documents, submit once, and wait for the decision (Google says reviews can take up to 5 business days). Do not open a duplicate profile while the appeal is pending.
