PO Box Wait List in Monroe? What to Do When Boxes Are Full

You checked online. The size you want is grayed out. Or you drove to the Post Office, stood in the retail line for twenty minutes, and left without a key. The problem is not your mail — it is capacity.

If every PO Box size you need at your local Post Office is taken, USPS says you can pick a different size, try another location, or join the wait list. When a box opens, they contact you by email or phone, and you then have two days to reserve it before it goes to the next person on the list (USPS: Rent a PO Box). That is the official path. It works — when you can wait.

A lot of Monroe, Sultan, Gold Bar, and Snohomish people cannot wait. You need a place for Amazon and FedEx tomorrow. You need a real street address for a bank form or a business filing. Or you simply cannot burn another lunch hour in the retail lobby. This page is for that moment: what the wait list really means, what a standard PO Box still cannot do, and when a private mailbox on Old Owen Road is the faster fix.

What "PO Box full" usually means in practice

USPS lists five common box sizes at most Post Offices, from a small letter slot (Size 1, about 3" × 5.5") up to an extra-large cubby (Size 5, about 12" × 22.5"). The depth on most boxes is about 14.75 inches. Not every size is stocked at every location, and prices vary by ZIP (USPS PO Box sizes).

"Full" rarely means the whole building is sold out. More often it means:

  • The size you need for packages is gone, while tiny letter boxes are still open.
  • Online search shows availability at a Post Office that is a long drive from US-2.
  • You are already on a wait list and the clock on that two-day reserve window feels short once they finally call.

USPS also notes that oversized packages that will not fit in your box go to the counter during lobby hours or into a parcel locker / Smart Locker where those exist. So even with a key in hand, big boxes can still mean another trip to the counter — the same counter that may already feel crowded.

The wait list is real — and so is the calendar risk

Joining the wait list is free of drama: you request the size and location online or in person, USPS holds your place, and they reach out when something frees up. The hard part is the two-day reserve window. Miss that contact, and the box moves to the next name (USPS wait-list FAQ).

That setup is fair. It is also a poor fit if:

  • You are mid-move and need a stable address this week.
  • A side hustle or LLC paperwork asks for a street address, not "PO Box."
  • Your packages already bounce because the seller will not ship to a PO Box.

If any of those sound familiar, keep reading. Waiting for capacity at the Post Office and renting a private mailbox are different tools. You can use one, the other, or both over time.

A standard PO Box still only takes USPS — unless Street Addressing applies

This is the piece people learn the hard way. A classic PO Box address is a USPS product. FedEx and UPS do not walk into a Post Office and drop a package into your numbered cubby. Merchants that route through those carriers often refuse a "PO Box" line at checkout. We covered the carrier side in detail in Why Amazon & FedEx Won't Deliver to Your PO Box.

USPS does offer an add-on called Street Addressing at some Premium / competitive PO Box locations. With Street Addressing, you may use the Post Office's street address plus # and your box number, which can let private carriers deliver packages that meet USPS mailing standards — if that location offers it and you sign the customer agreement (USPS Street Addressing overview; PostalPro: Premium PO Box Street Addressing). It is not automatic on every PO Box in every town. Call your local Post Office and ask before you plan around it.

Even with Street Addressing, age-restricted or special-signature private-carrier deliveries can still pull you back to a counter. So "I got Street Addressing" is not the same as "every carrier problem is gone."

When the retail line is the problem, not the box

Some people already have a PO Box and still feel stuck. The key works. The lobby does not. Holiday rushes, lunch-hour crowds, and signature pickups turn a five-minute errand into a wasted afternoon.

A private mailbox at a staffed CMRA (Commercial Mail Receiving Agency) flips that friction:

  • Staff can sign for deliveries during open hours so you are not chasing "we missed you" tags on your porch.
  • You get a real street address with a private mailbox number — the format shippers and many forms expect.
  • After hours, many renters use keypad access for the lobby and their locked cubby (details on our mailbox rentals page).

That last point matters on days the Post Office retail counter is slammed or closed for a federal holiday. Your mail still has a place to land.

What a private mailbox on Old Owen Road actually gives you

We are not pitching a vault, a bank, or unlimited anything. Here is the plain version for Monroe and the Highway 2 towns:

  • Street address: 19916 Old Owen Rd, Monroe, WA 98272, plus your PMB (or #) number — not a PO Box number.
  • Carriers we receive for mailbox customers: USPS, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, and DHL Express deliveries to that address are part of normal package receiving for standard use. Plans for higher volume exist; ask at the counter rather than assuming every shipment size is free forever.
  • Staffed receiving: Someone is here to take the package when the driver arrives during open hours.
  • Setup paperwork: Every private mailbox requires USPS Form 1583 plus two forms of ID. That is federal CMRA law, not a local quirk. We walk through the form in USPS Form 1583: Why It's Required.

One hard boundary: a private mailbox / CMRA address is not a substitute for a Form 5106 importer-of-record physical location or similar customs filings that demand a true premises address. If a form asks for the place where goods are stored or a business operates, answer that form honestly — do not swap in a mailbox number.

Also worth saying out loud: we receive UPS deliveries to mailboxes, but we do not accept UPS packages for outbound drop-off. Prepaid drop-off here is for FedEx, USPS, DHL, and Vinted Go (package drop-off). Receiving and dropping off are different jobs.

How to write the address so packages actually arrive

Wrong secondary lines are a top reason mail comes back. USPS Publication 28 wants PMB or # plus your box number — not "Suite," "Apt," or "Unit." Full examples live in Why Your Mail Gets Returned: How to Write a PMB Address.

A clean version looks like:

Your Name
19916 Old Owen Road, PMB [your number]
Monroe, WA 98272

If a website has a separate "Apt / Suite" field, put PMB [number] there. Do not leave it blank and hope the number sticks.

Already have a PO Box? You can overlap while you switch

You do not have to cancel the PO Box the same day you open a private mailbox. A short overlap is how people avoid the "orphan package" week — the week a seller still has the old address on file. The same idea shows up when people change private providers; see Switching Private Mailboxes Without Losing a Single Package.

A practical sequence:

  1. Open the private mailbox and finish Form 1583.
  2. Update Amazon, pharmacies, banks, and subscription addresses to the new PMB format.
  3. Keep the PO Box long enough to catch stragglers, then close it through USPS when the trickle stops.
  4. If you need held mail sent somewhere else later, ask about mail forwarding.

Feature-by-feature comparisons (hours, keys, business filings) already live in Private Mailbox vs P.O. Box: 7 Differences That Matter. This page stays on the capacity problem: full boxes, wait lists, and crowded counters.

FAQs

How long is the PO Box wait list in Monroe?

USPS does not publish a single Monroe wait time. It depends on size and how fast renters give boxes back. What is fixed is the rule after they contact you: two days to reserve, or the box goes to the next person on the list (USPS).

Can I put FedEx or UPS packages on a normal PO Box?

Not with a plain "PO Box ####" address. Private carriers do not deliver into USPS PO Box lobbies the way USPS does. Street Addressing at qualifying Premium locations is the USPS workaround — ask your Post Office whether Monroe's facility offers it before you rely on it.

Is a private mailbox the same as a PO Box?

No. A PO Box is a USPS product inside a Post Office. A private mailbox is a CMRA rental at a street address, with Form 1583 on file, and staff who can receive packages from multiple carriers.

Will you take unlimited packages?

No. Package receiving for normal use is part of mailbox service. If your volume is high, ask about a plan that matches that volume. Do not assume every carton is free forever.

Do I need to close my PO Box to open a private mailbox?

No. Many people run both for a short stretch while address books catch up, then close the PO Box when it goes quiet.
