Where to Print Invitations on Cardstock From a Canva File

Where to Print Invitations on Cardstock From a Canva File

You made the invitation in Canva. It looks great on your phone. Now it needs to be on thick paper and in people's hands.

Where to print invitations on cardstock: a local print counter that keeps heavy paper on hand, an office-supply or copy store, or an online printer if you can wait for shipping. If you designed it in Canva, download it as PDF Print, which Canva's help page calls its print format at 300 dpi (checked October 20, 2026). Then bring it in on your phone, by email, or on a USB drive. Here in Monroe, The Mail Station prints invitations on 110 lb cardstock. See our printing services.

That's the quick answer. The rest is about getting the card to look like it did on your screen.

Here's how it usually goes at our counter on Old Owen Road. A parent comes in with a phone in hand. The party is at Lake Tye Park on Saturday. The invitation is done in Canva, with balloons and a big name across the top. The home printer either jams on thick paper or doesn't exist. And the question is some version of: "Can you print this on the heavy stuff?"

Yes. Earlier this month we printed a stack of birthday invitations on 110 lb cardstock for a family here in town. Most of the work isn't the printing. It's getting the right file out of Canva.

What stores offer cardstock printing?

Google shows this exact question to people searching for invitation printing around Monroe. The honest answer: more places than you'd think, but they're not all the same.

WhereGood forWatch for
A local walk-in print counterA short run you want to see and touch before you payCall or ask what weight they run, since "cardstock" means different things

Other online printersBig orders and special finishesShipping time, and a proof you only see on a screen

Our take: if the party is soon and you only need a short stack, walk-in wins. You can hold a sheet before you commit. If you need hundreds with gold foil, an online printer is built for that.

What does "110 lb cardstock" actually mean?

Paper weights are confusing, and it's not your fault. Xerox's paper weight guide explains that the pound number depends on the type of paper. The same number can mean a light sheet in one family and a heavy one in another. Xerox even notes that the 110 lb cardstock many office stores sell is really index stock, which works out to about 74 lb cover weight.

So what do you do with that?

  • Don't compare pound numbers between stores. Compare the sheet. Hold it, bend it, and see if it feels like a card.
  • Look for grams per square meter (gsm) on a package if you're buying paper. Xerox says most packaging lists it, and it's the one number that compares fairly across paper types.
  • Ask to see a sheet before your whole stack prints. Any good counter will show you.

For what it's worth, 110 lb cardstock is what we print invitations on. It feels like a real invitation, not a flyer.

How to download a Canva invitation so it prints right

This is where most invitations go wrong. A screenshot or a quick share link looks fine on a phone and prints soft or cut off. Here's the export that works, using the steps from Canva's own help pages.

  1. Open your design and select Share.
  2. Select Download.
  3. Under File type, pick PDF Print. Canva lists PDF Print at 300 dpi. PDF Standard is 96 dpi, which is meant for screens (Canva Help).
  4. If your invitation runs color all the way to the edge, tick Crop marks and bleed. (More on that below.)
  5. Optional: under the advanced settings, turn on Flatten PDF. Canva says flattening helps fonts show up the right way when the file is printed (Canva Help).
  6. Select Download.

If the button says Pay and Download, your design has a paid element in it. Swap it for a free one, or pay for it, before you send us the file.

One more counter tip. Send the PDF itself, not a Canva share link. A share link opens the design in Canva, not the finished file, and it may ask for a login. The PDF is the finished card.

Bleed, crop marks, and why your words should stay off the edge

Canva explains it simply on its margins and bleed page:

  • Bleed is extra background past the edge, so there's no white sliver after the paper is cut. Canva adds 0.125 inch on all sides for products that get trimmed.
  • Crop marks are little lines in the corners of the PDF that show where to cut. They only show up in the downloaded PDF, not in the Canva editor.
  • The safe zone is inside your margins. Canva says to keep text and logos there.

Canva also says that if you print somewhere other than Canva Print, check with that printer about bleed, because they may trim at different margins.

Here's what we'd tell a friend: keep every word and face inside Canva's margins, no matter what. To see them, go to File, then Settings, and turn on Show margins. Then ask us how your card will be printed before you add crop marks. A design with a little white border always looks finished, which makes it the safest bet when the party's in a few days.

Why is there no print option on Canva?

This one comes up a lot, and the answer is usually your browser. Canva's print help page says printing isn't supported on mobile web. If you're in Canva through Safari or Chrome on your phone, you won't see it.

You have two ways around it:

  • Use the Canva app on your phone. Open Share and look for Use my printer (it may sit under More).
  • Download it as a PDF and print or send that file instead.

On a computer, the print button lives under Share, then See all, then Use my printer. You can also go to File, then Print, then Use my printer. On the home page, you can print only one design at a time.

How do I print from Canva to my printer?

If you want to print a test copy at home first (smart!), Canva's steps are:

  1. Open the design.
  2. Press Ctrl + P (Windows) or Cmd + P (Mac).
  3. The first time, pick Use my printer. ("Print with Canva" is the ship-to-you service.)
  4. Choose your printer, copies, and color, then print.

Canva also suggests printing one design size at a time and using CMYK colors for print. And it warns again that not all home printers handle full bleeds or crop marks. (Canva Help)

Our honest advice: print one copy at home on plain paper. Use it as your proof. Check the spelling of the name, the date, and the address of the party. Then bring the good file in for the cardstock run. Home printers are built for everyday paper. Feeding a stack of heavy sheets through one is how a fun night turns into a jammed printer and smeared ink.

What to bring (or send) to the counter

You don't need a laptop. The ways we take files are laid out step by step in Print From Your Phone Near Me?. For invitations, the short version:

  1. Upload it at /print/. The page takes PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, DOC, and DOCX files up to 5 MB each. Your pickup code shows on the screen right away. Take a screenshot of it before you close the page, and show it at the counter.
  2. Email it to print@mailstationmonroe.com. Attach the PDF itself.
  3. Bring a USB drive. Name the file something you'll recognize, like "Party-Invite.pdf."
  4. Open it on your phone at the counter, and we'll help you get it over.

A heads-up on file size. Canva says a flattened PDF can be bigger than a regular one. If your file is over the 5 MB upload limit, email it or bring it on a USB drive instead.

If your invitation started as a photo, a Word doc, or a printed sample instead of a Canva file, our flyer file guide covers those file types. Need a plain copy of a printed card? See Need Copies Made in Monroe?.

Questions to ask before a short run

Every print shop does invitations a little differently. Ask these before you send the file, and you won't get surprised at pickup:

  • What cardstock do you use? (For us: 110 lb.)
  • Does my design have a back side? If you made a second page in Canva, say so up front.
  • Does my card need to be cut down from a bigger sheet? Ask how your size will be handled.
  • How many do I need? Count the guest list, then add a few spares for the fridge, the grandparents, and the one that gets spilled on.
  • When do I need them? Tell us the party date when you drop off the file.
  • What will it cost? Ask at the counter or call. We don't list print prices in blog posts, because they depend on the job.

Mailing the invitations? Check postage first

Lots of invitations get handed out at school or daycare. If you're mailing them, here's a gotcha we see catch people: square envelopes cost more to mail.

USPS says a letter is "nonmachinable" if its length divided by its height is less than 1.3, and a square envelope fails that test (USPS DMM 101). Clasps, strings, or buttons, and pieces that are too stiff to bend, can also make a letter nonmachinable. USPS's current price list adds a $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge to those letters (USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026, checked October 20, 2026).

So before you buy stamps for the whole guest list, seal one finished invitation in its envelope. Then check what it needs. If it's square, or has a ribbon or a button, plan on extra postage. If you're sending holiday party invites or cards to family far away, our USPS Christmas shipping dates post has the official cutoffs.

Before you hit Download: an invitation checklist

Do this on the couch, before you send anything:

  • The name is spelled right. Read it out loud.
  • The date, start time, and place are right. (Yes, check the day of the week too.)
  • The RSVP phone number or email works.
  • All words and faces sit inside Canva's margins.
  • Any paid elements are swapped out or paid for.
  • You downloaded PDF Print, not a screenshot or a share link.
  • You know if there's a back side, and how many you need.
  • You printed one test copy at home or looked at the PDF full screen.
